La Carolingia is a poor neighbourhood, located in Guatemala-City, near the
city dump. Boardmembers of the Juergen Wahn Foundation visted a "Kindernothilfe e.V" project there in 2003.
Carmen Barrios, head of the Day Care Center and her staff, invited us to meet with the children and their parents. After a welcoming
speech by Carmen, the children performed a "Peace Play" about the Civil War, which lasted thirty-six years.
During the visit we observed how the Day Care Center provides children with necessary pre-school education, nutritious a meal and
health care. During free time, playing and sport activities are offered.
The celebration of holidays are important events
that are also attended by the parents. Frequent visits from the staff to their homes creates trust and reveals the difficult
circumstances under which the children are growing up. Our goal is to provide the best possible education, their only chance out
of poverty and illiteracy.
A recent addition to the Day Care Center is a park, which enables the children and the adults of
the neighbourhoud to play soccer and other games in a safe environment. Here, the entire neighborhood comes together to socialize.
