Welcome in Pochuta.

Pochuta, Guatemala, is a village entirely inhabited by indigenous Mayan people. In 1992 Juergen Wahn Foundation financed the building of a Day Care Centre for the village. The project was undertaken in partnership with another German non-profit, "Kindernothilfe e. V." In April 2003, a delegation from the JWF traveled to Pochuta to visit the Centre.

A crowd welcomes us at the village entrance and walks us to the Day Care Centre.

A dance-performance especially for us.

The staff at the Centre had been looking forward to meeting us for some time. After a welcoming speech, the children gave a traditional dance performance, and then presented us each with a small gift.
This Centre built in Pochuta, provides the children with nutritious meals daily, in addition to educational opportunities previously unavailable. For many Mayan children the center provides the only path out of poverty to a better future.
We were very impressed and grateful; to see the wonderful job the dedicated teachers and staff have done here.

In discussion.

Klaus Schubert, (who is fluent in Spanish, discusses agricultural techniques with one of the teachers. He also brought from Germany some agricultural literature including, "Everything You Need to Know About Planting Corn."

In Guatemala, corn is a food staple. It is used for many products (e.g. Tortillas) and is served in some form in almost every meal. Increasing corn yields can greatly help reduce hunger in the village.
The Day Care Centre needs your support. Please help the Mayan people in their effort to become self-sufficient.
